WPU bili, Jahrgang 9 und 10 im forstbotanischen Garten

We, the bilingual Social Science Course, went to the forest botanical garden on Friday, 28th August. There we met three postgraduate students of Forest Sciences. They thought of fun and entertaining ways to teach us about the forest, its animals and plants.

The first activity included learning about forest health with drones and technology. We had a look at different images of forests worldwide and observed the handling of a drone. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to fly the drone ourselves because you need a special license to do so.

For the second activity we went walking through the forest to find and count the animals. To do so we were equipped with binoculars, a big butterfly net and the MerlinApp. It was quite interesting to find out which sounds come from the different birds. Also, our findings were uploaded to the iNaturalistApp, which actually helps scientists.

The third activity was a competition between the 9th and 10th graders. We had to drill a core from a tree in order to gain some information about its health and growth conditions. This is important for scientists to get information about climate conditions in different times.

Another highlight at the end of the day was that we went to the university canteen at the Northern campus and had a delicious meal.
