English Reading Contest

A competition for young readers

by Nalini Kratzin

On Tuesday, July 15th a competition for young readers (about 12 or 13 years old) was held in the library of the Hainberg-Gymnasium. Five schools had sent a teacher to be in the jury and their best English readers with one or two supporters to the competition. The readers were:

Antonia from the Eichsfeld-Gymnasium Duderstadt, Paula from the Max-Planck-Gymnasium, Ryan from the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium, Miriam from the Hainberg-Gymnasium and Nalini from the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium

In the first round the five students had to read a text they chose on their own. It only needed to be about 2 pages long and of course in English. Two students read a part from “Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone”, one read “Diary of a wimpy kid” and another one read a text from the English Book “English G21”.

The second round was to read an unknown text. It was named “Go Home” and each student got a different part to read. The parts were chosen by the readers who had to take a little piece of paper with A, B, C, D or E on it. The kids had a short period of time to read their parts quickly before they read them to the jury.

In both rounds the jury gave them points for their pronounciation, intonation, speed and so on.

After the second round the jury had to choose one contestant to be the winner. And then the results were announced:

  1. Miriam (HG)
  2. Nalini (OHG)
  3. Ryan (FKG)
  4. Paula (MPG)
  5. Antonia (EG Duderstadt)

Each student got a certificate and an English book. I think all read really well and everybody enjoyed it.

So, I hope the competition will be held again next year.
